Totally Wire: Documentary and Album Announced

A crowdfunding campaign has been announced for People in a Film, the forthcoming documentary on Wire.

Produced by Malcolm Boyle and Graham Duff, the highly anticipated film is expected to combine story-telling with new content that reflects the surrealistic and creative output of the band.

Wire are actively engaged in the project, and filming has already started. A special one-off event brought together the original line-up, including Bruce Gilbert, and work has been done at the studios where Wire are recording their new album (expected in 2020).

A special launch event is in the diary for 13 July 2019 in London. The event will be hosted by the producers and feature tasters from the material cut so far.

Spoons Serve Up New Video

Spoons, the legendary Canadian group who swept the world with the hit, “Nova Heart,” have revealed the first video from their latest album.

“For the First and Last Time” is a catchy, upbeat number that sounds current but has a classic Spoons feel.

The album, New Day New World, was released in March. It is the first Spoons album in eight years.

Lisa Gerrard and Bulgarian Choir Set for London Show

How Balkan throat singing crossed into the Western alternative music scene is an interesting story. That Lisa Gerrard has teamed up with The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voice is an even more promising venture.

First introduced to the West through tapes made by Marcel Cellier, the sounds of the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir were striking. World music had not yet become a major genre, so music from the Balkans was popularised through field recordings collected by folklorists like Cellier or AL Lloyd.

The magic of Cellier’s tapes reached Nonesuch in the US, which licensed the recordings to 4AD, a label better known for Clan of Xymox and Cocteau Twins than rural throat singing. That led to two compilations under the banner, Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, sitting in milk crates alongside records by The Birthday Party and Dead Can Dance.

Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance was a fan as well as a label-mate. Fast forward three decades, after the fall of pseudo-socialism in Bulgaria and a break in the activity of Dead Can Dance, to find Gerrard teaming up with the current version of the choir for an album and live shows.

BooCheeMish, a new studio album, features Gerrard on a number of tracks but isn’t a vehicle for the Gladiator singer alone. The music has evolved since the 1980s-including by the addition of beatboxing in one place-but maintains an essential link to the spirit and culture of Bulgarians. The styles and sounds of the voices that make up the choir are given space to breathe but the collective is key to the magic that results.

Machinista Return to London

After an extended absence from London, Machinista are returning to Europe’s largest city with a new album in tow.

The Swedish poptronica all-stars are playing at Elektrowerkz on Saturday, the 3rd of August, 2019. Also on the bill are Mexico’s Hocico, headlining, and Mirexxx.

Machinista first played the UK at Cold War Night Life’s Evening with the Swedish Synth event. The band, based around the duo of John Lindqwister and Richard Flow, play danceable pop with dark themes. They also have an interest in alien visitors, which will make them feel at home at Slimelight.

The new Machinista album, Anthropocene, is released on the 7th of June.

Images of Moog: Electronic Voyager

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Bob Moog was one of the most important figures in electronic music. As the creator of the Moog synthesizer, followed by a line of instruments that bore his name, he changed the way that music is made and listened to.

Waveshaper Media, the producers of the modular synth documentary, I Dream of Wires, are putting together a new film about Moog’s life.

Electronic Voyager is a story told by Moog’s daughter, Michelle Moog-Koussa. Through the musicians who used Moog’s instruments to create their art, she gets closer to the story of her father and his visionary work.

Participating artists include Jean-Michel Jarre and Rick Wakeman; the latter opening up his Norfolk shed to reveal an obsession for MiniMoogs and a sense of humanity that is unexpected for a caped keyboard wizard.

Waveshaper are running a fundraising campaign on Indiegogo. With graphic design by Brett Wickens (Ceramic Hello, Spoons) and rarities including signed prints of Gary Numan, this project will be of interest to anyone who loves electronic music.

GusGus Light Fuse on New Video

Lifted from last year’s Lies Are More Flexible album, it sees the band teaming up with Kitty Von-Sometime from The Weird Girls Project. Von-Sometime was brought to the project by choreographer Unnur Elísabet Gunnarsdóttir, but also has a child with the GusGus vocalist, Daniel Haraldsson.

Shakespears Sister, the wilfully misspelled pop duo, are back. Marcella Detroit and Siobhan Fahey have announced tour dates, a compilation album and a new single.

“All the Queen’s Horses” is out on 15 May 2019, and it will be followed by Singles Party, a CD collection of the band’s previous hits.

Diamanda Galás Takes Control

The American avant-garde artist, Diamanda Galás, has announced that she has taken control of her back catalogue. Galás plans to re-issue all of her work in physical form, on her own label.

Intravenal Sound Operations will release The Litanies of Satan, her debut album, in the autumn of 2019. The album is being recut from the original master tapes.

Galás’ material is also available on digital services now.

Lau Nau: Inspired by the Sea

“Amphipoda” is the latest release from Finland’s Lau Nau.

Recorded at Stockholm’s legendary Elektronmusikstudion EMS, using a Buchla 200 modular system, the composition translates data on Baltic Sea life into music.

Lau Nau explains the science behind the sounds:

This composition is inspired by how the biomass of plankton vary in the Baltic depending, for example, on the entering saline pulses from the North Sea, the oxygen levels and the temperature of the water.

The effect is primordial synthesis on waves and currents.

Pieces of Juno Makes Waves

Norway’s Pieces of Juno – whom we have described rightly as one of Norway’s best young artists – has revealed the first track from her forthcoming new album.

“Ocean Floor” inhabits the space that Tuxedomoon once occupied: the room where jazz and experimental pop intertwine.

Surfacing with piano and scraped strings, the song has tangles of sax and a crust of percussion. Juno’s vocals lap gently against the rhythm along with crests of reverb.

It practically smells of the sea.
