Test Dept are reopening their archives this December. The South London industrial pioneers have announced a 4-CD anthology, Industrial Overture: Studio & Live Recordings 1982-1985 (Artoffact Records); bringing to light early experiments, live material, and several unreleased documents.
Founded in London’s New Cross in 1981, Test Dept made a name for themselves by converting scrap metal, discarded machinery, and urban detritus into percussion instruments. They overlaid the klang with electronics, tape loops, and an unwavering political urgency. Their performances — frequently staged in disused industrial venues or rail depots — were multimedia affairs involving film, theatre, and activist collaborators.
The Industrial Overture box set gathers 42 tracks across four discs, including the first-ever reissue of their cassette-only debut, Strength of Metal in Motion, the long out-of-print Ecstasy Under Duress and Atonal & Hamburg. A fourth disc contains unreleased material and two BBC John Peel sessions. Dozens of these tracks are making their debut on CD or digital formats, and twelve have never before been made publicly available. All content has been remastered under the supervision of the band and engineer Paul Lavigne.
This release also marks the first in a planned series of archival editions under their new deal with Artoffact, which also includes a new studio album targeted for 2026. In conjunction with the box set, Test Dept will tour Europe in late 2025, focusing on Poland, Germany, Spain, and Sweden, with shows blending remixed early material and previews of new work in fully electronic format.

For listeners and scholars of industrial music, this box set is a historical reset. While Test Dept’s later period saw them lean into techno and performance art, their early 82–85 phase remains provocative for its raw commitment to noise, rhythm, and politics — especially moments like their live collaboration with the South Wales Miners’ Choir. The visuals, the materials, the militant posture: this is the terra firma that Industrial Overture rises from.
